CYCLING (still under construction); Penghu is superb for cycling. Hire bikes from the name card below; NT$250-300 per day. (see name card and shop front below; Ou Jia Long has good bikes and speaks a little English).
Or you can use one of the govt. mountain bikes they keep at the airport, which are free (see photo left) but available on a first come fist served basis. Advisable to phone the airport first to check on availability. The airport also has a 'bike station' where you can pump tires and do basic maintenance - presumably to encourage people to fly in with fold-up bikes etc.
Maps are available at the airport. Best way is to explore for yourself; bring additional maps (even satellite maps or google) as the local maps are somewhat incomplete.
One the nicest areas to cycle is Huxi Township, which is the eastern half of the main island. There are endless cycle paths which hug the coast & beaches of the main island chain. You could do 3 days cycling without covering them all. Its relatively easy to navigate your way around the coastlines using these cycle paths, from which you will always find many interconnecting routes. General rule: stay off the main roads - you'll see nothing, unless you want to admire the infrastructure. On the other hand, the smaller lanes will reveal the true beauty of Penghu.
