Qing Luo Spit
Somewhat off the beaten track, Qing Luo Spit forms a beautiful lagoon which is protected from the prevailing winds in any direction (save westerly winds which hardly ever blow), thus it remains a tranquil body of water year round, and is ideal for windsurfing, kiteboarding, kayaking or even just swimming. In the summer, the north facing beach is also very calm and has brilliant white sand, with views out to the northern islands of Ji Bei and beyond.
The spit is also a prime spot for birdwatching, where there is a public observation kiosk.
During the winter months, you will often see windsurfers and kiteboarders out on the water; this has to be one of Asia's best flat water sites for such sports - however, the lagoon only fills up at high tide for a '5 hour window', i.e. 2.5 hours either side of high tide, when it can be 'sailed' - if planning a visit, check the tide tables below;

North Bai Keng Beach The next beach along the coast from Qing Luo is North Bai Keng beach. This beach is super private, being accessible only by bicycle track. With beautiful snow white sand, in summer the swimming is good here at mid-high tide, which means at least 50% of the time (so worth checking out the tides from the link above). However, even at low tide its a pleasant place to while away a few hours or have a BBQ. Not visible from any coastguard post, providing you clean up after you leave, there's no harm done, and no-one's the wiser. Cycling along the coastal bike track past this beach & around Hu Tou Shan (虎頭山) is exquisite - one of my favourite cycle routes. |
Bai Keng beach
About 1 km south east of N. Bai Keng beach is Bai Keng beach proper.
Even on a summer weekend, you are likely to have this beach all to yourself. Sand quality is great - snow white like N. Bai Keng - although watch out for coral on the tidal flats at low tide. Again, best swimming is at mid-high tide. And by moonlight, just for the experience..
